Cary Henry's problem sound like a blown head gasket to me. Normally problems
that crop up immediately after a rebuild relate to some type of improper
installation. I immediately thought of a problem I had when I bought a late
model circle B head for my early motor and assumed that since the head came
from a later car I would need a later model head gasket. Wrong!! Since you
indicate you have a 76 I doubt even if you had installed the early head gasket
that it would overheat/leak, at least not immediately. If perchance you
rebuilt an early engine (71 and earlier I think) you will need an early head
gasket as the early block does not have the recess around the pistons to
accommodate the metal ring on the late model gasket. I learned the hard way
that you can't compress the metal ring enough to seal the head if you use a
late model gaket on an early block. Either way it sounds like you will need to
redo the head gasket. It's amazing what stupid things I will admit to
 in public. Good luck.
