I've been asking around a lot on this one (when my third cam bit the
dust), and the answer is that it looks like Kent Cams can make new blanks,
but they are not cheap. All the vendors will give you $$$ for useable
cores. There are _lots_ of bad cores out there. Bad cores usually have one
or more lobe that is missing or badly worn. It is possible to build them
up by welding, but the resultant lobe will not stand up to very much
punishment.
I do not know if Crane or another larger manufacturer is making new
blanks. There is a possibility that some new blanks might come out of
India, but I have not seen any yet.
Almost all the cams with "sporty profiles" are regrinds except for NOS
early PI cams (which is pretty "sporty".) Some Kent cams are likely made
from new blanks. The key is - if the place you wanna buy the cam from
requires a good core, then you're getting a re-grind. WHether it's your
cam that is getting reground is another question!
I also know that there are various "caches" of cams out there and if you
talk to one of the legit cam grinders, they can probably hook you up with
a good core, but the bottom line is that they are getting fairly scarce. I
also know that some new NOS cams are still in the wild, but they show up
in dribs and drabs. The problem with those cams is that you are left in a
quandry - do you satisfy your need for speed, or do you leave the new NOS
cams in the standard grind for the folks that acually need them.
I can eleborate, if need be.
Bottom line - don't chuck your cams until you know there is absolutely no
hope of resurrecting it.
Now, if someone wanted to fund me, I'd love to come up with a roller cam
profile for TR6... with that and engine management, you could def. get the
HP curve "up there". :-0
