[TR] [NET] Wire terminations

It's a double-edged sword.  If you have the correct crimper for the terminals you are using you will get very good results.  Most $30 crimpers you get from H-F don't necessarily properly fit the crimps they sell.  I bought a pair and I stopped using them since I can just pull the crimps off by hand.  But if I use the AMP crimper here at work on the AMP crimps the results are as good as it gets.  And it's quick.  And consistent.  Same results every time.

Soldering works well - IF you know how to solder.  I solder pretty well, I have a lot of experience and I do it frequently when I don't have the proper crimper.  But take care that you don't linger too long and wick a bunch of solder up the wire creating a stress point that will fail under vibration.  And a cold solder joint is as bad as a poor crimp.
For water-proof connections solder is better with a wrap of good-quality electrical tape.  But the best ever is a special heat-shrink tubing that has hot melt glue on the ID.  The glue melts when the tubing is shrunk and forms a solid seal against all possible intrusions.  Not easy to find, however.

I also solder bullet connectors when I need to add or replace one.    Stan    From: NET <net-bounces at newenglandtriumphs.org> On Behalf OfDavid Friedlander via NET

Subject: [NET] Wire terminations    Hey all ~    Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and were able to  spend some quality time with loved ones....    I've got a new wire harness for my TR3 in hand and was  wondering your thoughts for those wiresnot using bullet  connectors, (I'll likely use the bullet crimping tool from  British Wire for that). So, for wires requiring spades, rings,  etc. do you suggest soldering these terminals or is crimping  a better choice? If crimping, what tool have others found to  be reliable?
