[TR] TR3A Split column removal question

I have rebuilt a spare steering box for the tr3 and getting ready to put it into the car.

I removed the control head, stator tube, and removed/loosened all necessary bolts, nuts, etc. My question is how do you get the lower shaft loose from the coupler and pull it out?

I can put a pry bar at the lower end and move the box slightly up and down but it's moving it all the way to the steering wheel.

I'm stopping for the night and will get back to it tomorrow afternoon / evening. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
