One alternative might be a rotary switch with 3 or 4 positions and some suitable resistors. Direct connection for high obviously, maybe 1 ohm for medium and 2 for low. A pair of 1 ohm 5 watt resistors should be only a few dollars on eBay.
You'll need to do your own research, but something like this might do for the switch
