Most buyers would never consider removing and inspecting the inner surface
of each wire wheel on a car so equipped but if I ever buy another car with
wire wheels, it is something I will ensure is done before purchase.

Couldn't agree more! My younger son bought a superbly restored RWA MG Midget
two years ago that had had wire wheels fitted to a previously steel wheel
equipped car. Not only had the hubs been fitted on the wrong sides so that
the wheel loosened with the forward motion of the wheel but the studs had
been sawn off too short and needed renewing. As this meant dismantling the
hubs to fit new studs, we decided to do the job properly and fit proper wire
wheel hubs as the factory would have done when the car was new. Cost a lot
more but at least the car is now safe!
