Jerry –

Thank you for your contribution. It is the bearing that could use the special tool, not the circlip. It can be done without the tool, and we have succeeded in doing that thanks to the advice from another British car mechanic.

Dave and others:

TRF and maybe others once sold the circlip tool (it’s not a bearing but the circlip that needs the special tool). Photo of the tool is attached. You might check your local club as someone may have one and could remove that circlip for you. The Churchill Tool number might be S-698, it’s hard to read on the tag. They sometimes come up on e Bay but are getting hard to find. I was lucky to get mine from a retired well known TR 4 racer who advertised it for sale, so maybe a racer close by you would have one too. Maybe one of the British based TR suppliers still sell them. It seems that I did see one advertised on a web site of a Brit supplier.

Best of luck, you can fight the clip off with several small flat blade screwdrivers, usually takes a couple of tries and ruins cheap screwdrivers in the process. I’ve done it.

If the photo gets stripped send me an e-mail and I’ll send the photo directly to you.

The TR4 transmission has a bearing in the middle that requires a special tool.

Anyone have it? Know where I can get it?

Thanks!
