My experience is with old German cars popping out, but FWIW: In an old VW
Bus, you would ride with your hand on the shift lever as you cruised down
the road. This lead to extreme wearing of the shift fork on the 4th gear
side, and so you could never push it all the way into gear. A little
power* in 4th, and "pop".
I'd try a fluif change, but then consider looking at the fork and sliding
sleeve.
* In a 1964 VW Bus, "a little power" meant foot to the floor and forty
screaming horsepower. Fweem!
