John, I had the same question about Castrol fluid and talked to someone from their engineering dept.  they said Castrol is and always was synthetic.  So the same fluid that you used back in the day is the same fluid  they sell now.  They were just required to add synthetic to the label.   I have alway used and still useCastol The last 30 years plus.  No problems.
