[TR] Brake Fluid

I use Valvoline synthetic (DOT 4) in all the cars I race, it has a nice high dry boiling point and I flush the brakes with new fluid before every event. It's also reasonably priced at Autozone.

In cars where I respect the paint I use silicone (DOT 5) so when I spill or it leaks, the paint is not ruined. I used silicone once in my race car and I had to pump it on the track twice for every corner and when I came into the pits about 12 pumps to get any brakes back as the stuff had completely boiled. I was lucky not to hit anyone.

To convert one to the other I recommend rebuilding everything to clean out any residual fluid, new hoses and flush the hard lines with alcohol. If you don't do this, you may have little hard balls form in the system and plug a line and lock up a brake caliper. That's what happened to me once.

Cheers, Henry Morrison

Several cars we were rebuilding the hydraulics but still had to flush the
lines. One car just pumped it through. Really helps to have speed bleeders

Makes it very easy.

There are a number of people who will claim it destroys seals, etc. no.

Could you please give me your views on the use of Castrol Synthetic DOT 4
brake fluid in a '62 TR4. Is it the appropriate DOT 4 fluid to use now...or
is there something better? I had previously been using Lockheed DOT 4 in my
TR4 as it had been readily available at a local shop until recently. Back in
the day I used Castrol Girling in the '59 TR3A and '67 TR4A I had at that
time. Also, if anyone has any information on any requirements or issues in
converting to DOT 5 silicone I would appreciate them.

Thanks
John Finlayson
