I have used a piece of 1/2" plastic tubing and my left ear for nigh on 50 years and it seems to work just fine.

The dial set came with dampers on each gauge to reduce the bounce, but you have to adjust them individually. Sooooooo,  I need to buy a new one.   There are other types out there now -- dial type and bubble types.

Any type better?  I would figure less obstruction is better, but other than that don't know.

not trying to start any trouble -- just want to hear from the collective wisdom and I'll sort out the feedback for myself.
