Of course, painting or other process rather than replating might just mean that the $500-800 per bumper for quality rechroming could be put into needed bodywork, engine rebuilding, or 1000 other tasks necessary to get the car going safely, if not to a mythical "Concours-quality" appearance. The pretty stuff can come later; some folks would rather enjoy the car from the driver's seat, where it's hard to see the bumpers. ;)
