[TR] Wire wheel front hub question

Are you sure you are not just looking at the normally smooth portion of the
hub?  Here's a random photo from a Google search:


Sometimes the grease from the splines can show marks in that smooth area
that look like the remains of splines (made as the wheel is dragged off
through the grease).
