Are you sure you are not just looking at the normally smooth portion of the hub? Here's a random photo from a Google search:
Sometimes the grease from the splines can show marks in that smooth area that look like the remains of splines (made as the wheel is dragged off through the grease).

So I replaced a leaky inner tube on the front driver side tire today and while putting the wheel back on noticed that about 1” of the outer splines had worn smooth on the hub. The wheel looks normal inside and I hadn’t noticed anything different lately. I will replace it asap, but just wondering what the cause of this might be? I’m fairly certain it is the original hub.
