Tony, you mention "just after an engine rebuild" I know when I redid the big 
four cylinder in my Healey 100 it leaked out the rear seal more than I would 
have liked at first, then got much better, my theory is the rings weren't 
fully seated and blow by created a lot of crankcase pressure, once I had 
driven a couple hundred miles it got much better, but did not go away 
entirely.
