[TR] Update on TR4A speedometer quitting

I wasn't able to remove the little odometer reset handle so I couldn't remove
the speedometer mechanism completely from the case. There is a very small
screw holding the reset knob and I can't get it free. The speedometer seems to
spin pretty easily now. I will check it again before I install a new cable.
I got a price of $175.00 from Nosigner to restore the speedo. I have a new
TR4A gauge bezel and had painted the inside of the speedo white so the
instrument lights work pretty good. I hate to send it off an not have a speedo
for a month..
I might sent the tach and speedo off next winter for a rebuild but we will see
how this works.
Thanks,
Dave

  Dave -

That plan may work but sometimes excess oil inside the speedo head can cause
problems. The bearing that the drag cup spins on is very fine and the
clearance between the magnet bar and drag cup is close -- both can tolerate
very little lubricant before they misbehave.

The binding may not even be in the area where the lube you spray will be
going. In mine the binding that broke the cable twice was the shaft of the
trip odometer and the fix was to disassemble the odo and clean up the shaft
with some fine emery cloth, then lube (grease) in the little cup formed for
that purpose in the shaft.

After checking out my TR4A speedometer, I found that like the tachometer,
the
speedometer had locked up and broke the cable. I was ablet to free it up
by
dripping penetrating oil in the cable end and letting it soak. After about
5
minutes of trying, I was able to free it up. I ran some brake cleaner in
it to
hopefully flush out the crap in there. I will pick up a can of WD40
(can't
believe I don't have one) and put a few drops in the end before I install
the
    new speedometer cable.
    Still working out the bugs..
