But they are low profile nuts so it is easy to not engage the nut
properly if the wrench has a taper. Most combo wrenches have a better
"edge" on the open end. I guess one could dedicate a wrench to this
task and grind off some of the face so that the opening is good and
sharp.

Something is wrong. All the nuts on my 3, 4 and 6 are 1/2". I use the
box end of my stock 1/2" Craftman wrench since the dawn of time. And I
am pretty sure the thread size is BSF 24 TPI.
