I believe it is an urban myth.  There are many ways the ignition system
(including but not limited to the Pertronix module) can fail; some of them
are sudden and some are not.

For example, when my 2 year old Lucas coil died, the engine would start with
great difficulty and idle more-or-less normally, but not pull a load at all.
