[TR] TR3 Backup Light

When that L494 lamp was available through UK dealers (same for US?) it
was fitted underneath the lower rear panel and in a location roughly
equivalent to the exhaust tailpipe to 'balance' back end protrusions and
appearance. Looking at one or two TR rear ends on Goggle, the centre of your
lamp should be just to the left in a vertical line down from the RH spare
wheel cover lock. Dad had a factory TR3 for several weeks on long-term
evaluation in about 1956 that I remember well.
Not having a TR3 to hand as I
write - to make measurements, the lamp stem may be long enough to drill a
mounting hole in the boot floor? That said, it's worth remembering it was a
universal lamp offered by Lucas to all UK auto manufacturers and I doubt Lucas
made a lamp with differing stem lengths. If the stem on your lamp is too
short, I'd advocate making an 'E' shaped bracket out of steel strip and using
it as a distance piece to have the lamp lower down. The top of the lamp should
have about half an inch clearance from the rear panel above it.
The switch was
an illuminated push/pull unit and part # 0-597-07  illustrated at
www.thetoolboxshop.com will give you an idea of what it looked like. It had a
white lens. This went on the instrument panel below the overdrive switch.
That's where the factory put it but if you don't want to drill a hole
there, you could use one of the supplementary switch panels displayed if you
do Google Images and type in Lucas L494. There are chrome ones and black
textured ones.
