OTOH, considering how much damage that pulley can do if it decides to come
loose (as it will if the hole or shaft are the least bit worn); I've always
opted to spend a little extra time with a wrench and remove the water pump
with the pulley installed.

Of course the fact that replacement water pumps used to come with
permanently installed pulleys probably has something to do with it as well.
