The original factory metal clips (rivets) held the trim much closer to the
body than the modern plastic ones.
If you have the modern plastic ones there is normally a bit of a gap and
Terrys suggestion of using something behind the trim as a shield is a good
idea. something like a thin acetate sheet slid behind and then taped in
place would work fine that way you can use a metal polish or jeweler's
rouge to brighten the trim without getting it on the paint.

The more difficult one in some ways is polishing the paint up to the edge
of the side trim with the same intensity as you can with the more open
areas of the body.. the small 1inch polishers are ok for that.. but a PITA.
I had considered sticking my side trims on with body tape, but figured if i
did it would always be hard to polsih the paint properly up to the edge.
