[Tigers] old tires

A few years ago we had 67 XKE in our shop to get it ready for the road after 10 plus years in storage,  we did the usual, flush all fluids, replaced gas tank and cleaned and resealed the carbs, and of course tires were on the list along with some repair and trueing of the wire wheels. While the car was on the lift before we got to the wheels and tires one of the 10 plus year old tires blew out. It completely delaminated and it didn't even have the weight of the car on it,  had that come apart while driving it would have really done a lot of body damage to the car and who know about personal injury. I know most folks don't like to buy tires,  but they are the first line of safety defense in both our daily drivers and our special interest cars,

I learned my lesson with an Alpine front right blowout.

Fender damage? I'm sure the old guys among us will remember the case of
a Tiger owner returning from a show when his tire blew out. The wreck
was disastrous. His passenger spent the rest of her life in a nursing
home, I believe.? Lawsuits ensued. 60 Minutes got involved. End result
of tens of millions of dollars of research and litigation resulted in a
ruling that said any tire over 5 years old is the owners risk. And that
risk can be great.

It wasn't long ago that my Tiger and I were traveling along the interstate
in excess of 70 MPH when I heard a BAM!  My left-rear tire had blown out
and it was completely flat.  I managed to get off the road and take a look
at the tire (photo attached) and found that something had pierced the tread
and come out the sidewall of the tire.  I managed to get the car jacked up
using the stock jack and mounted the spare.  It even had air in it.  The
spare had virtually no miles on it but it was more than 30 years old.  I
completed the drive home, trying to stay below 55 MPH, without mishap.
Just goes to show that it doesn't matter how fresh your tires are, you can
still end up on the side of the road with a bad tire.  The Tiger now has
four new shoes, so I should be good for another 10 years or so.  I'm still
keeping the 30 year old spare though - it's served me well and the new
tires are too fat to fit under the floor in the trunk.
