I don't know...makes the horn install possible? Lends strength? Who knows.

What I do know is they just promote hot air re circulation underhood and blocking them off is one of the first things to be done, if experiencing overheating problems!

I never heard that explanation before.  But along those lines, my old Jetta had a large hole next to the radiator.  There was a rubber flap over this hole, secure only at the top.  I think that the idea was that at road speed it would open and provide extra airflow to help keep the engine compartment cooler.  But stopped, the flap would close off the hole, preventing hot air recirculation.

The answer was, the holes are to let air flow over each exhaust manifold when driving to cool the under hood temperature. Did anyone else ever heard of this answer?
