[Tigers] The holes on the left and right of the radiator on the Sunbeams

There was a Tiger question years ago when someone ask this question in one of the sports car magazines, on why there was holes on the right and left side of the radiator mount sheet metal.
The answer was, the holes are to let air flow over each exhaust manifold when driving to cool the under hood temperature. Did anyone else ever heard of this answer?
