I have been told (reliable source) that a new
cork will just stretch over, no need for glue.

I've also attached a picture of the original lid showing the spring loaded part that I am talking about. I added a couple of arrows showing where rivets were that held the insert in and another arrow pointing to the cork gasket. I'll use some small self-tapping screws to replace the rivets and I want to replace the cork while I'm at it. The metal insert looks like it is press fitted together but I don't really want to start prying on it and messing it up. If nobody has any better idea I'll probably just cut the old cork out and cut a new piece with the same diameter and glue it in.

So I am looking for ideas about replacing that cork gasket. It doesn't look like I can take the metal piece apart, so do I just take a razor and cut away the cork and cut a new piece of cork to fit? Also, this spring loaded metal piece was held in to the cap with four rivets. Should I just use self-tapping screws on the new cap?
