You should have a neoprene gasket for the sending unit. No need for a gasket sealer. I have never replaced a BE tank but have not seen sealer used on other cars. In any case you will have a vented cap so there not be any pressure build up.

I am placing a new fuel tank and sending unit in my bugeye.I plan
to ground the unit from one of the screws that holds it on the tank to
the nuts on the gas tank, and one wire lead from the sending unit
itself to the hole on the bottom side of the body where it will
connect to the wire harness.Does this sound correct? The nut on the
sender will be facing toward the front of the car.Do I need to place
gasket sealer on the sending unit? Are there any other wire
connections needed before I install the gas tank?
