[Shop-talk] Wiring a UK appliance in the US?

I'd be a tad leery of bringing a UK induction cooktop and running it on US power without a lot more info first. The differences run deeper than being 'earthed' vs 'grounded'.
They use 230VAC 50Hz there vs 120VAC or 240VAC 60Hz here. The voltage difference is probably not an issue but I'm sure your warranty is out the window. And the frequency difference
might be a non-issue or it might just not work. An induction cooktop typically feeds the input power into a converter that boosts the frequency up quite a bit, like into the kHz range. This circuitry is
probably tuned to 50hz (used everywhere in the world except for North America and a couple of other non-conformists that use 60Hz) and may or may not work properly at 60Hz. You can
get a simple transformer to convert the voltage from 240 to 230 if need be but to convert the frequency you would need something quite a bit more involved.
I'd recommend searching a bit more and finding something that meets your needs and is designed to be used with the power you have. Like:
http://www.apwwyott.com/products/champion/induction IHP-2
(it says 3 phase but is just a normal 240VAC unit).
