Electronic ignition? That can result in three wires on the -ve (the original one to the distributor no longer used), and also two on the +ve.
Other than that the third wire could go to an immobiliser switch.
The factory diagrams label - and + for Mk2 and later, CB (contact breaker i.e. points i.e. distributor) and SW (ignition switch i.e. 12v supply) for Mk1.

Thanks Barney, but I have 3 wires on the distributor side, one to the points, and the terminal that goes to the tachometer has a double wire connection, so 1 to the points, 1 to the tachometer, where does the other one go to, or do they both go to the tachometer?
