Did the pulley come with the new alt?  Have you checked the width of that 
against the original?  Will the original fit the new shaft?  What's the 
width of the new belt against the old?

You need three pulleys capable of accepting the same belt, and the correct 
belt for those pulleys.  If one or more pulleys are wider than the belt then 
they are likely to slip.
