Matt, Barney has a chapter on his site on this subject.

I've always done most of this already and have to say it works well.

Subject: [Mgs] valve cover gasket

Fellow Listers:

Quick question: When installing a new valve cover gasket, should one put
some permatex sealant on one or both sides of the gasket (valve cover side
and cyl head side) or should the gasket be installed completely "dry"?

  Thanks for the help....
