Have you tried the old reliable pull-one-plug-wire trick to isolate a bad
cylinder? I mention this because when my TD started running rough and lost
power on the drive home from buying it, I popped the piano-hinged bonnet on
the ignition side, planning to do preslicely that... and saw the #1 plug wire
waving merrily in the breeze. The spark plug had actually snapped -- the
insulator broke off at the metal hex, which was still in the head. Fortunately
there were some used plugs in the box-o-spares that came with the car, and the
lovely and talented Julie Bell found one for me. Out with the old, in with the
new, reconnect the wire, drove home in style. 

Here's hoping your problem is
that obvious and that easily fixed.

Hi Mark,
   If there is
oil in the damper and the front carb has been rebuilt, its
piston should not
bounce of its own accord. Since the piston rises and drops
because of the air
flow, I would check compression on cylinders 1 and 2 as a
rough check that
they are sucking air equally.

Meant to get down to Bailey's today, never made it.  Mike won't be happy about
that.

There's a TC down there that is being a problem child.  Runs rough,
sputters
and stumbles, has no power.
Monday I cleaned up the rear carb.  No
real difference.  What I did notice was
when holding the throttle
open to
about 2 - 2,500 rpm the piston in the rear carb was steady as a rock.
The one
in the front,
which the owner rebuilt not that long ago, bounces up and down
in time to the
rough running.

We'll see if I can make any progress based on
that.  Cars can be such fun.
