That’s almost how it was.

The Donald Healey Motor Company never built a body on the Warwick Healeys. For the complete cars they had contracts wih Elliott and Westland build a complete body and it would be sold as a going car from Warwick or the London showroom. If someone wanted a car from a different coachbuilder the rolling chassis would be supplied to either the end purchaser or coachbuilder. Some coachbuilders would buy more than a single rolling chassis (or one as the case may be) and build the body. With Beutler a number rolling chassis were supplied and bodies were built.

There is no connection between Duncan Industries and Beutler. Ian Duncan set up Duncan Industries to produce a car called the Duncan Dragonfly which had a BSA two cylinder engine over the top of the gearbox with Moulton rubber cone suspension. All more than a decade before Issigonis came on the scene with the Mini.

Funds were short so they started offering complete coachbuilt cars on either Healey or Alvis chassis. In 1947 the British treasury increased sales tax from 33 1/3% to 66 2/3% for cars over £1000.00 making the Healey a very expensive car. In response Duncan offered a car with a very rudimentary bodywork for under the amount where even the passenger seat was an extra. It was called the Healey Duncan Drone and was the forerunner of the Healey Silverstone.

Buyers of the Drone could have their cars rebodied with no sales tax to pay as it was then a second hand car. It is thought that there were 39 Healey Chassis bodied by Duncan Industries and of these 21 were saloons, 3 were roadsters and the rest Drones.

Our car, see attached photo was the last one built and not finished as the taxman came to the door wanting ££££££. Everything was sold, including our car that went to the local Alvis dealer (still exists).

There are seven Healey Duncan Saloons and one Roadster still in existence and two Drones.

I have the pleasure of inspecting Warren’s cars.

If I recall correctly these were built off the duncan drone or some facsimile thereof.  It had to do with the UK putting a heavy tax on bodied cars, so it was better to buy a chassis and engine and pay someone to build a chassis separately at the time.  Part of the reason we threw tea in Boston Harbor....

Having driven it, I know this Beutler bodied Healey quite well.



The car is a Warwick built Healey with Riley running gear. The Donald Healey Motor Company never made bodywork for any of the cars and sold many as a rolling chassis. Some were sold to the Swiss coachbuilder Carrosserie Beutler who built bodies for the Healey chassis. This is one of them.



This particular car also took part in the Mille Miglia in the late 1940s.
