Note the kickdown can be used to, uh, kick down. Say you're following slow traffic in top/OD, and you see a chance to pass coming up; you throw the dash switch and when it's clear you stomp on the accelerator pedal, the O/D will disengage and you're in a lower gear to pass. Doesn't work great--I usually drop a gear too--but it's doable. Note older cars with automatics usually have them, rigged to the throttle linkage.
Triumphs, and others, also have a beefier accumulator for faster engagement (a mod sold by DWM and others).

Michael,
Yes, agreed. He said the same to me in a discussion as to why Triumphs don’t have the kickdown whereas the Healeys do. Actually that wasn’t long after your visit.
(Dave Twigger is pretty much The Man in the UK overdrive world. So far as I recall, his father-in-law bought all the overdrive spares when Laycock stopped manufacturing. Or something like that. Bit like Fred at AH Spares? He’s a nice guy, very helpful.)

Subject: Re: [Healeys] OD switch
As explained to me Dave Twigger the purpose of the kickdown switch is to prevent the overdrive unit being subjected to reverse torque which it is not designed to handle.
As I understand it, if the overdrive is treated with respect, and the clutch is used during disengagement there will be no problems but, if you flip the switch off when cruising at high speed without using the clutch to minimize the reverse loading on the overdrive, the planetary gear assembly can be severly damaged.
The kickdown switch prevents this.

Hi All
I installed the new OD brass drain plug with the o ring and so far 🤞🏻not a drip of oil anywhere. I think it’s a great design by Cape International.
I did see someone posted about eliminating the od switch on the firewall and just needing to use the switch on the dash . No more needing to Blip the throttle to activate the od . Could that someone please explain the wiring needed to make this change . It sounds like another modern up grade to make our driving experience easier.
Thanks as always , Don
