Yes agree. That hi torque motor is likely a shunt motor with lower current
(= lighter windings) than a regular series connected starter.
Surprised that there was no smoke or heat if it was shorted ! Perhaps you
removed quickly.
In effect you have shorted the batt +ve and -ve poles so no voltage
anywhere else.
