Healeys Rough Running

Hook up a 4" dia tube like the one used on the heater to draw air in on the carb side of the engine and point it so it blows air cross the float bowls. ( even warm air (should be enough to eliminate the vapor lock). and install a 4" dia axial flow fan in the tube ( avaiiable at boat shops used as a bildge pump fan).

If the engine has been rebuilt or built for increased performance it may have been statically balanced. If so the flywheel should be replaced in the same position as it may have had weight added or removed to match other components during the process.

No, the flywheel does nothing to trigger the ignition. Make sure though that you replace it in the same position you took it off (mark with centre punch or permanent marker). If you do not this you may upset the balance if the crankshaft, as in properly rebuild engines the crankshaft is balanced with the flywheel and clutch assembly fitted.

Well you should know that the effective freeze plug operation depends
entirely on perfect alignment of the flywheel ring. Check the workshop
manual.

Cheers ;P ,

Thanks--I'm removing it to access the aftermarket oil seal that I think is leaking. I found a small puddle of oil on the floor in that approximate area and could find no other source of the leak.Tom

If it's not (relatively) new, I recommend replacing the front seal on
the gearbox--inside the bellhousing--while you have the gearbox out. Oh,
and check your release 'bearing.'

Well I guess we'll/I'll find out this weekend then for sure as I replaced the freeze plug, but I also had a leaky block drain plug that could have been caused by the improper alignment. Or it could have just been operator error when I smacked the freeze plug in place rather than whacked it in place.?
???Or can you say: "leg pull"? Thanks Alan.

Sounds like the standard, factory correct Healey vapor lock. When the engine is turned off residual heat soaks out of the engine and boils the fuel in the float bowls. Try cooling the float bowls with a spray of water or a wet rag. If that solves it you know the problem, although not necessarily the solution.

Keith,

Did you happen to feel the coil after it acted up?? if it is that, it
will be very hot, so be careful to avoid burning your hand.

Yup. My BJ8 does the same, but I haven't driven the BN2 enough to say it
does too (I presume it does/will).

You said 'would not restart,' as in it would crank, but not fire, or
wouldn't crank? When a marginal starter gets heat-soaked they often
won't crank the engine as fast which, of course, makes starting more
difficult. Same with a heat-soaked, marginal fuel pump; it might not
pump well enough to (at least partly) overcome cavitation in the fuel line.

Vapor lock;
Mine starts at 195 on the gauge during warm weather with heat sink to 200+ when shut down to cool. About 20 minutes and it runs again.
I wrapped fuel lines but haven?t installed the heat shield I?ve had for many years.
Hence I rarely drive it in mid summer here in KY
