[Healeys] High beam warning light color

Hello,

I have recently put a completely new wiring harness into my Mk1 BT7. The
harness is fully installed but the exterior body panels are not and you have
a good view of the wiring behind the instruments. Yes it is possible to
cross the wires and put the wrong bulb in the wrong instrument but this
would be against how the harness is laid out. The attached wiring diagram
shows which wires go to which instrument. This wiring diagram is not a
reproduction but comes from a period work shop manual for BN4 through BT7.
The manual is Part N. AKD1179A Issue 2 if anyone need to know.

If anyone would like pictures of the back the instrument cluster let me
know.

Lets not forget Lucas, the Prince of Darkness is never far away!

Harold

Same for the BJ8 (mine, at least).

There might be enough slack in the wiring harness to cross up the two leads.

Hi All,

It seems to me that the Anderson -Moment book is in error. According to the
Concours guidelines and all other sources and pictures I looked at today,
the Tach has the Ignition light and the Speedo has the High Beam light for
all Big Healeys from the 100 through the BJ7.

Instruments (Gauges) Gauges

Gauges on Big Healeys through the BJ7 models (with the exception of the 100S
which is not covered in these standards) were supplied as original with,
from left to right,

*	"Safety gauge" that showed oil pressure and water temperature

*	Speedometer that incorporated a mileage meter (with a number on the
face

indicating ratios), trip meter, and a high beam warning light,

• Tachometer that incorporated a "ignition" (discharging) warning light
(with various numbers on the face denoting ratios)

*	Fuel gauge

*	European market gauges were metric (speedometer (KPH) and

safety (combo) gauge (centigrade))

I would like to see a photo of a gauge the other way around.

Hi Bruce,

Your quote from Anderson and Moment is correct but their description is
contradicted by the faces of my speedo and tach. In my BN7 the tach has
printed on the face above the red colored lens “Ignition” and the speedo
has printed above the blue light “ High Beam”. Foreign Speedo put a red
lens into my speedo but after reviewing the feed back here and other sites I
decided to put the blue lens into the High Beam on the speedo and the red
lens in the Ignition warning light on the tach..

After 15 years of driving my car without any colored lens I am happy to see
color now.

Thanks to everyone for the advise and information.

Hi, Ron. According to Anderson and Moment, pg. 104, “On the right was the
tachometer with a number on the face indicating the ratio, and incorporating
the red (emphasis mine) high-beam warning light.” Based on this, I used a
red lens (a piece of stage light gel) when I had mine apart.

I need some help with the proper color for the high beam warning light in my
‘61 BN7.

The 2004 Originality Guide (page 9) says that cars destined for “continental
export” had blue warning lights for the high beam and red for the ignition
warning light. My car was shipped directly to California for sale by a
dealer here. Is that considered “continental export”?

I just had my speedo repaired by Foreign Speedo. The little colored lens
for the high beam warning light was missing since I bought the car. Preston
told me they discovered a red lens inside and he reinstalled it.

So, I am wondering if it should be blue or red? Since I have the gages out,
now would be the time to make it right if I can find out what is right.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ron Fine
