You are correct--the question has been discussed and speculated upon
intermittently over the years, and it appears we still do not have any one
plausible explanation, much less a definitive answer.  The matter certainly
does not rise to the importance of whether or not the Apollo moon landing
was or was not made on a Hollywood set, and I guess I will have to content
myself with the fact that no one really knows.  However, while the truth
may be lost to time and I can go to my grave without resolution of the
issue, I simply doubt it was an inadvertence.
