[Healeys] Fuel pumps (AGAIN!)

My experience is that of Michael’s and David’s. I have always had a stock SU pump in my BT7 and have replaced it just once in the 43 years I have owned the car. That includes the early years when it was my only car and thus my regular transport, and later years when it sat for long periods (months) without use, including our Canadian winter months. I don’t use any additives and have used gas containing ethanol up to this year, when I switched to a brand that contains no ethanol. My recommendation would be use the original part.

I would concur with David's comment.

Certainly the SU pumps have gained something of a reputation for poor reliability but like David I can remember very few failures which have not been caused by extenuating circumstances such as being clogged up with "sloshing" compound or laying idle for many, many years.

I use a original rebuilt but unmodified 1953 "L" model pump in my 100 which has, to date at least, proved to be completely reliable.

Of course now that I have said this my pump will start to give trouble next spring ... watch this space :-(

I do not understand the problem with the SU pump that everyone feels that they have to re invent the wheel. I have using the standard SU pump with points in my Healey for almost 75000 miles and never had a failure.

We also have been installing the standard SU points pump here at the shop on every car we do for over 40 years

Everything from Healey’s, MG’s and Jaguar’s and had very few failures.

I found the voltage regulator was misadjusted when i got my car. At 17V, a new pump quit working in less than a year. At 14V, the replacement is 10 years old and happily ticking away.

Hi Bob,

I’m also not sure why you’re having problems with pumps. Maybe something common between all of them; the vent, the ground, the venting of the fuel system, etc.

I replaced my original pump in the late 80’s with a stock SU pump with points and it’s been on the car ever since; no problems except last year when it didn’t want to start, but a rap with a rubber mallet and it’s been working ever since.

Try Healey Surgeons for a replacement pump. Their parts are 100% correct and I’ve never had a problem with anything from them in almost 30 years.

Best of luck,

Frank
