[Healeys] Healeys Digest, Vol 11, Issue 9

In the North of Ireland we were not surprised when the South switched from
miles to kilometres. Just another way to put two fingers up to Westminster.
But we were horrified, if not surprised, to hear that they were going to
take it one step further and drive on the right. They were apparently going
to introduce this in stages...people whose names began with letter A to J
would switch on Day One; the survivors would switch on Day Three.

As a joke, during a political campaign, one of the party running in the
Quebec Provincial Election promised to introduce driving on the right-hand
side of the road but like all good politicians would do, they were going to
introduce it in stages, trucks, buses and semi-trailers only for the first
month, and then all cars after that........

...in 2009, Samoa changed from driving on the right to driving on the left.
Having experienced driving in Samoa before that, It would not have been the
place to be on 8 September 2009 (despite a 2 day holiday and a 3 day ban on
alcohol sales!)

I recall that there was a kind of switch back arrangement at the border
between Togo and Ghana. Over the switchback and down onto the other side of
the road. Or under it and swap over. It worked as a method, but once back
onto their respective road(?) systems(!!!) it didn't make a lot of
difference which side of the road you were on. I've driven in quite a few
places but Africa is the most, shall I say, interesting traffic wise.

Hello

Yes that is correct there are more people in countries that drive on the
right. However it reminds me of a Margaret Thatcher quote:-

"If it is once again one against forty-eight, then I am very sorry for the
forty-eight."

Interestingly all period Bugattis made and Ferrari competition sports cars
of the '40s, '50s and '60s were RHD.

Also far more relevant is that 92% of all Austin-Healeys were made in LHD
but only require about a week's work to convert.

FYII don't know where I got a short cotter pin for the fulcrum pin from, but
it was short enough that grease came out. I have figured out that those
cotter pins have to protrude about 1/4 inch above the king pin boss and then
tightened a lot while moving the king pin around to get them centered.I was
having play at the wheel because the cotter pin wasn't really tight and
blaming worn fulcrum pins and king pins. I replaced the short pins with old
long ones and all is well again.Ken Freese65 BJ8

Hello

That's been the talk of the town over the last couple of months. Plus it's
not just from the US either as there was another bloke who had big problems
with a DKW he imported from Germany.

BTW. There are more countries that drive on the left hand side of the road
than drive on the right.

Andy,

I wish you had sent this about 6 months ago. I tried the same approach but
couldn't find the ARP parts that would fit and settled on the replacements
of unknown origin.

This might be of interest to some folk on the list.

A while ago I was looking at the six cylinder engine rod bolts and found
they are not available in high strength steel and the only options appear to
be used original or lucky-dip replacements of unknown origin. I looked at
several bolts from other engines and with the help of ARP tech support
settled on 454 Chev part number 135-6401 which are 1/16" too short and
0.0075" bigger diameter. This increases the torque from stock 50lbft to
80lbft or approx 60% higher clamping force as well as providing press-fit
location of the cap.

The caps needed spot facing to account for the reduced length which I
achieved with a 3/4" counterbore off Ebay

There is so much variation in the stock bolt holes that some needed a lot of
reaming and some none. Bolts were installed using a brass hammer since I
don't have a press.

Some pics attached of the semi-finished rod, it has had the clamping faces
machined 0.005" each and now goes back to the engine shop for resizing the
tunnel. There are two ways of resizing, using a hone which is rather sloppy
or using a machine which is far more accurate as it doesn't increase the
sideways diameter. The bolt holes are extremely close to the bearing tunnel
so honing isn't a good option.

Cheers,
Andy.

Okay, you got my curiosity flowing. Where is the car? Is there a ball park
figure you're interested in? Does it need to be put on a trailer or can it
be driven in its present state? Does it have a fresh paint job? Fresh
rebuild? Etc. And yes, it sounds very interesting.
Thanks,
Steven?
