As with any old car rust should be the first concern, as Michael, I, and others stated the rear end was not the strongest or best engineered as built, and can become dangerous over time with metal fatigue and corrosion, so the first concern is getting a good solid car. Surface rust on the frame should not be a concern, but rust through can and has occurred as these things are now 40 plus years old. Poke around with a screwdriver, look for signs of perforation.
They are pretty soft in stock form (relative of course, someone not familiar with old sports cars would probably find it quite lively), and many owners or potential owners would be happy to leave it that way, but it really doesn't take much to perk the motor and handling up.
So as is pretty much always the case with an old car, make sure the bones are solid and straight, and you can pretty much make of it what you will from there, and I still think it may be a grand or two high, similar car on my local CL is listed for $4500, listing includes a couple pics of a good looking frame.
