[Healeys] Starting a BJ8

Thanks for this. All sound advice is welcome, as ever. However, these two posts slightly ignore the question asked and the realities of the situation.

1) We want to know BJ8 owners starting procedures and we said that we were content with fuel/ignition issues at this stage.

2) The car is in an underground car park in Paris and it’s mechanic, me – until my nephew learns a bit more – is in Devon, UK.

3) I think that the car is setup pretty well and that its failings are down to beginner’s technique AND, very likely, a sticky choke mechanism which isn’t delivering enough of what matters when it matters.

Hence the question was framed the way it was.

I only point this out as we have had so many useful replies and that it would be a shame to go off on sidetracks and cut off the supply of relevant posts.

Sorry, I can only back what Kees writes. Have a proper maintained engine without the high priced gimmicks, a propper ignition system and carburetters, do all the necessary adjustments, pull the choke to far end and the engine fires and runs just after one turn. No need of high speed gear starter, no need of high performance coil, no need of electronic ignition, no need of ......

It doesn´t matter if it is a 4 cylinder, or any of the 6 cylinders BN4 to BJ8.

First make sure points/dwell angle are adjusted correctly, renew plugs, check coil, resistor and condenser, adjust ignition timing, set valves, adjust the carbs and floats, fill up the pods and make sure the pistons are free to move. Check that the starter and ignition wiring is tip top, not forgetting the earth strap.
After that just pull the choke right out and start up pushing home the choke knob gradually as the engine warms up. Pumping does not really help as the carbs are presumably SU.

My nephew has just recently acquired a very nice BJ8 which he imported from the US to France. Some of you may recall being asked for and kindly giving advice re vendors and cars etc.

Now, the car is safely tucked up in a garage in Paris and all is well......

Except.....except – there’s always an “except” or a “but” isn’t there? – except, it doesn’t really like starting. It needed a new battery which we’d been told to expect but, even with that, it’s a little slow to fire up.

10+/- attempts my nephew said.

Now, I’m in England; the car’s in France and my nephew would be the first to admit that he’s never been a mechanic or owned a car remotely like a 3000. So, it’s very likely that his technique needs polish!

(The fuel pump works; fuel get to the carbs. The ignition seems good and will soon be better (in my own humble opinion) with a Pertronix EI and a “Flamethrower”(?) coil.

Leaving aside any worries as to potential problems with fuel or spark for the moment:-

How do you guys start your BJ8s???

One pump? No pump? Choke and foot half down?

What do you do if it fires then goes dead again?.....give it a little pump when it coughs, then ease off?

Yes, we know that they’re all a bit different as are we, but I’m trying to establish a start point. (No pun intended!)

Simon
