[Healeys] Clutch-related noise

G’day

Pounds to peanuts that it’s the carbon bearing rubbing against the iron contact at the back of the clutch and that you are only noticing it since you the top is up and sidescreens are in. It goes away when you push the clutch in as there is pressure on both components. Simple!

I have the same noise in the Riley gearbox of the Healey, used to have the noise in the BN3 a few years back when it was last running and have it today with my Toyota Hilux with its 5-speed manual gearbox.

Michael--

Thanks for the input and you may be correct, but as said it is possible that the noise is nothing new and simply a function of my driving the car buttoned up. hearing what was not evident earlier.

Since the sound appears to be present even at idle I am going to put the car up on stands and see if I can pin it down from underneath while it is running with a stethoscope as Michael Salter suggested.

I don't plan to drive it till it breaks but as I said earlier if it is a failing bearing--thrust, throwout or input shaft, etc.--it will certainly make itself more evident as its condition deteriorates.

You know, by now you should have figured out you have to take it apart in any case. There is nothing you can do while it is assembled in the car. 99% of the time you never know what is really wrong until you disassemble and inspect. Best case you will end up with a new clutch and throw out bearing. Hopefully nothing wrong with the transmission, but it would not hurt to do a cursory internal inspection while it is out. Better to head off trouble before it becomes a real and expensive problem. Or, you can just drive it until it breaks. Just my 2 cents.

It seems unrelated to engine speed and sounds the same with the car stationary in neutral and clutch out as it does at speed in any gear.

Michael,

Can you determine if the noise is related to engine speed?

While driving today I noticed a new noise: A faint but constant whining/

purring sound that is present when the clutch pedal is NOT depressed, whether in neutral or in gear and whether in motion or sitting still.

When I depress the clutch pedal the sound goes away. Clutch and transmission operation seem normal. BTW I have a Toyota five-speed with a BJ8 diaphragm clutch.

Thoughts please?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
