Hi John,

I am pretty positive that the plate is original to the car...unfortunately the solenoid was missing when I got the car so I really don't know if it was perhaps fitted the other way around.

One thing that has just occurred to me is that my car, body #174, was one of the very early cars that had the extra lug on the bell housing for a 3 bolt starter as can be seen in this picture from the parts book.

The car is in storage at the moment but I will go and take a look later this week to see if the extra width of the bell housing necessitated that the solenoid be re-positioned.

I have never seen or heard of this before: but that does ot prove anything. Could it be that a non standard starter solenoid had been fitted in the past and was not the same shape as the original?

I can think of no other reason why there would be a reason for fitting the solenoid further forward.

Having said that it could be that the solenoid was fitted the other way around with the hand button more accessible but if so then the original bracket would have been made larger in the first place.

  Best regards

The BN1 that I'm currently restoring is 500 odd body numbers later than my own.

On my car the original cast aluminium starter solenoid is mounted on a plate which is in turn mounted onto the bracket welded to the firewall as in this picture viewed with the solenoid removed.

The "supplementary" plate is missing from the car that I'm presently working on Body #793.

I am unsure if this mounting plate had been dispensed with by the time this car was assembled or if it is just missing from this car.

Anyone out there know if or when this was discontinued?

    Thanks,

    Michael S

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
