[Healeys] BN1 Starter Solenoid Mount

Hello Mike

Interesting how things were done.

Attached is a photo of the engine bay of the BN3/1 taken a few years ago not long after the engine disgraced itself.

The starter solenoid doesn’t fit in the normal position so the someone at the DHMC moved the plate forward and rotated 90 degrees so the solenoid is pointed upwards.

BTW. The engine and engine bay now looks slight better.

Hi Curt,
The plate is secured to the bracket with 2 x 10/32 oval head Phillips screws PMZ0208 with split washers and hex nuts.

Interestingly neither the plate nor the screws attaching it to the bracket are mentioned in any of the 100 parts books that I have.

Michael,

An interesting detail.

It's difficult to tell from the photo, but is this plate screwed in place, or are the two fasteners pop rivets?

Unfortunately I don't know of may cars that are in the body number range of 174 to 793 that we can reference. I'll check with the owners of nos. 663 and 724 to she which versions they have.

I believe that the owners of nos. 554 and 598 are on "The List"

The BN1 that I'm currently restoring is 500 odd body numbers later than my own.

On my car the original cast aluminium starter solenoid is mounted on a plate which is in turn mounted onto the bracket welded to the firewall as in this picture viewed with the solenoid removed.

The "supplementary" plate is missing from the car that I'm presently working on Body #793.

I am unsure if this mounting plate had been dispensed with by the time this car was assembled or if it is just missing from this car.

Anyone out there know if or when this was discontinued?

Thanks,

Michael S
