[Healeys] Oil pressure pipe

25 years ago i was leaking oil by slow drops from the pipe on the gauge. An old time mechanic told me to go into my mother’s sewing basket and find some cotton thread and wind it around the pipe and replace the nut. Never a drop since.

My experience: without some air in the hose or hard line the oil pressure gauge needle will vibrate from oil pump pressure fluctuations. The air acts as a damper to prevent that.

I replaced the flexible hose without thinking about air getting into the system and the gauge worked fine. When I did think about it, I thought I should bleed the air, which I did. The needle immediately began vibrating severely and continued until I disconnected the line at the gauge and reconnected it without bleeding. A couple years later during my return from Conclave in San Diego, I noticed the needle vibrating again. Investigation found the nut on the line behind the gauge loose, with a drop of oil hanging from it. Apparently, the line bled itself through the loose nut. Disconnecting and reconnecting the line fixed it.

The flexible pipe which comes out of the block on the RHS, under the carbs, and is the beginning of the pipework to the oil pressure gauge..............

I think that mine is seeping a leetle tiny seep where it comes out of the block. Nothing that matters, but it won’t get any better.

So, my guess is that there’s a dodgy washer in there somewhere. Now, if I take it all apart, air will get in to the pipe???

Does that matter?

If it does matter, what’s the cure?....Run the engine and loosen off the connection at the back of the gauge??
