[Healeys] Splines and Wheels

Thank you.
Yes handbrake applied.
Movement is back and forth in direction of normal rotation.
Tightening with weight off car, first by hand then a say 3/4 taps with a mallet; still movement then really have to slog it to eliminate it and feel could be stressing something.

Roger, what do you mean by "peripheral play"? Does that mean that when you tighten the spinner that you can turn the wheel back and forth (i.e., as it normally turns), or that you can rock the wheel sideways? There is some play in the rear axle/differential, so if you are turning the wheel back and forth you may just be seeing the rear axle play. Apply the handbrake until the wheel doesn't move. If the wheel still moves when you try to turn it, then the play is between the wheel and spinner.

Are you tightening the spinner with the weight of the car off the wheel, as you should?

If none of this applies and you really have to hammer the spinner, then something is definitely wrong. I normally hit the spinner until I don't see it moving, then lower the car to the ground and tap it again. I've never had a spinner loosen up. Oh, I also never hit the spinner directly with the hammer, but use a piece of scrap wood and hit that. Wood is cheaper than a new spinner, or even a new lead hammer.

As designed, the wheel is clamped between the taper on the spinner/taper on the outer wheel hub and the taper of the splined hub/taper on the inner wheel hub. Driving torque is mainly carried by the splines, but I suppose friction of the taper surfaces could account for some of it, especially if the splines are worn.

I have just installed new MWS 5.5in 72 spoke wheels and new Moss (USA made) splined hubs on the rear of my BJ8. Also fitted new turret lug nuts.

I am not happy with the fitment as have to hammer the hell out of the spinner to take up the peripheral play in the wheels.

What gives ? Spoken to both MWS and Moss and they are at a loss.

I can confirm that the hub mounting studs are not touching the inside of the wheel and that the spinners are not bottoming.

Switched front to back spinners and no change.

Spinner thread ID seems to be within spec. at 2.194 in

Now thinking about new spinners .. ?? Are there perhaps spinners with a different taper .. ?

Anyone had similar issues ??

As an aside, trying to get my head around all this, appears to me that torque is also (as well as splines) transmitted by the taper fit between the wheel inside and hub, as otherwise the wheel would not tighten when the spinner is tightened .. ??
