[Fot] TR6 Racing Tire Question

Interesting to read Tony’s comments, because my experience is generally the opposite. Guess that’s why there are choices in the market.
I ran the toyo R88Rs for years on my GT6 - 205/60-13s - and decided to try the Speedsters when they started making them in 13s several years ago. I find they are much more consistent - they don’t get greasy halfway through a session in warmer weather which the Toyos did for me. For the Toyos, about 15-20 minutes into a session, going “off" was a consistent issue. I find the breakaway is more consistent too. My lap times are a hair better, 0.5 to maybe 1.0 seconds - with the Hoosiers.
That said, I’m running 13" wheels in an 1850 lb car and you are running 15’s on a car that is probably not much heavier, so your tires may have an easier job of it. As you know, I work the GT6 pretty hard. For me, the consistency throughout the race is worth it, but Tony is right - they certainly wear out more quickly. I figure the Speedsters give me about a season (5 weekends), and then they become the second set on my spare wheels for practice sessions, etc. I used to get the Toyos shaved and even then it was tough to wear out the rubber, but at a certain point they had just been through too many heat cycles to be usable anymore. The Speedsters have a softer compound, no question.
In the 13s, the price diff is about $70/tire. Only one way to find out - get a set and give them a try!
Alternator - not sure how easily they adapt to the TR6 mounting, but I run a 55 amp Denso alternator that I think was originally spec’d for an Isuzu - pretty common. Pep Boys under $100. Can be wired as a one wire set up, plus the output cable. I was able to use the block mounted bracket with a long bolt to hang the alternator out front (single shear mount) and a lower strut supporting the adjustable bracket from further down on the block. I run cogged belts so there’s not the tension issue. I’ll dig the spare out and find the number, but it’s definitely not quite a bolt in swap.

Mike, this is on a TR-4, but I've switched from the Speedsters to the R888R's and am very happy with the switch. I get much longer tire life (primary factor in the switch), they don't get greasy halfway through a session like the Speedsters do (or at least they did for me), traction and handling characteristics are very similar, forgiving breakaway, and MUCH better in the wet than Speedsters. I had to go plus 1 on the wheel diameter to keep the tire diameter the same since they don't make the R888R in 60 series. I run 205/55-16's, but have run the 205/50 15's in the past and they are fine too.
