Here is a wild guess... The Triumph 6 cylinder flywheels use a shrink
fit ring gear. The gear reduction starters push the bendix towards the
rear of the engine, and if the ring gear was installed with the beveled
teeth facing the rear of the car, not the front, I can see how the ring
gear might get pushed back so far that the pinion gear can't reach it
any more. Should be easy to check looking into the bellhousing where the
starter came out.
