Hi Dennis,Yes, I have experienced the exact problem with a hitorque starter on an MGB motor in my Elva Courier. My solution was to purchase a spare pinion gear and with some judicious grinding on the gear nose got the toothed area to move further out to fully engage the ring gear.  Removing and replacing the pinion is very tricky but can be done.  You will wish you had a third hand. That's the easy part.  I found the ring gear badly burred  because of the minimum engagement.  At this point the motor was out of the car and the trans off.  I used a fine triangle file to dress all 130 odd teeth on the ring gear.  Not the best solution but it worked without replacing the ring gear.JoeSent from my Galaxy Tab A

Here is a wild guess... The Triumph 6 cylinder flywheels use a shrink fit ring gear. The gear reduction starters push the bendix towards the rear of the engine, and if the ring gear was installed with the beveled teeth facing the rear of the car, not the front, I can see how the ring gear might get pushed back so far that the pinion gear can't reach it any more. Should be easy to check looking into the bellhousing where the starter came out.

Thanks to all for your help.

Update:  I have pulled starter and bench tested it and it looks like it is working correctly. The pinion gear is moving out and spinning.

Inspection of pinion gear shows contact pattern at less than 50%. Inspection of ring gear shows same patters. It looks like the pinion gear is not coming out far enough or failing to mesh with ring gear.

Has anyone seen this?

Hi,

there are several gear types on the flywheel and the gear on the starter needs to match.
There are pull push types, or push pull types, the engage flange need to fit and also the teeth distance and such stuff.

Besides that, those starters are quite reliable.

Cheers
Chris

FriendsHas anyone had a problem with the Wosp gear reduction starter?  I installed one on a new engine and after 15/20 starts, the starter spins but does not engage the ring gear. Battery voltage is 12.60, engine is properly grounded, all cables, solenoid and wiring are new. Any recommendations on a gear reduction starter?ThanksDennis Walje68 GT6
