Here is a wild guess... The Triumph 6 cylinder flywheels use a shrink fit ring gear. The gear reduction starters push the bendix towards the rear of the engine, and if the ring gear was installed with the beveled teeth facing the rear of the car, not the front, I can see how the ring gear might get pushed back so far that the pinion gear can't reach it any more. Should be easy to check looking into the bellhousing where the starter came out.

Update: I have pulled starter and bench tested it and it looks like it is working correctly. The pinion gear is moving out and spinning.

Inspection of pinion gear shows contact pattern at less than 50%. Inspection of ring gear shows same patters. It looks like the pinion gear is not coming out far enough or failing to mesh with ring gear.

Friends

Has anyone had a problem with the Wosp gear reduction starter? I installed one on a new engine and after 15/20 starts, the starter spins but does not engage the ring gear. Battery voltage is 12.60, engine is properly grounded, all cables, solenoid and wiring are new.

Any recommendations on a gear reduction starter?

Thanks

Dennis Walje
68 GT6
